Steps to prevent osteoporosis in Asian women
Osteoporosis is a medical condition that affects your bone density. Over time bones become less dense and more likely to fracture. If you don’t take the necessary steps to prevent osteoporosis or if it’s left untreated, bone loss will progress to a point where a bone will break. Fractures due to osteoporosis typically occur in the hip, spine, or wrist.
There are several risks factors that increase the chances of your developing osteoporosis including:
- Having a thin, small-boned frame
- Family history of osteoporotic fracture(s)
- A diet low in calcium
- Estrogen deficiency
- Advanced age
- Cigarette smoking /excessive use of alcohol
- Certain medications
Additionally, studies have shown that White or Asian women have an increased risk for developing the condition. And, in fact, more recent studies have shown that the risk for Asian women is even higher vs white women.
One factor involved in the increased risk for Asian women is that they have been found to consume less calcium in their diets, a mineral that is essential to build and maintain a strong, healthy skeleton. One reason for this is that Asian Americans, as a whole, are more prone to developing lactose intolerance vs other ethnic groups. Therefore, they avoid dairy products which are the primary dietary source for calcium.
Asian women tend to be slender with less bone mass which puts them at greater risk for osteopathic bone fractures.
Treating the condition
While there is no cure for osteoporosis, there are several medications that are available to prevent and/or treat the condition. These medications work by slowing the breakdown of your bones thereby helping to maintain bone density while decreasing the risk of fractures.
However, it’s also necessary to make some healthy lifestyle changes in order to successfully treat osteoporosis such as:
- eating a well-balanced diet that’s high in dark green leafy vegetables, dairy products, fish with edible soft bones and calcium-fortified foods
- limiting your alcohol intake
- quitting smoking
- establishing a regular exercise routine that include weight-bearing exercises as well as those that can help to improve your balance and posture
For Asian women, especially those that have lactose intolerance and must limit their intake of dairy products, adding a calcium supplement to their daily routine may help them to meet the calcium requirements for preventing osteoporosis.

Getting an adequate amount of calcium in your diet and engaging in regular weight-bearing exercises and/or physical activities are critical to achieving and maintaining good bone health. White and Asian women who are at an increased risk for developing osteoporosis should consider supplements to prevent osteoporosis.
